Identifying Common Household Spiders
What you may recognize as a common household spider is actually not one particular type of spider — but several different species. Common household spiders are generally about ⅜” in size and usually tan or light brown with dark markings on the underside of their abdomens. Common household spiders are generally not dangerous, but their bites can cause skin irritation, especially to those with sensitive skin. These spiders have almost non-existent webbing and are the most common spiders found in homes in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, NC.
Wolf Spider Control
There are 125 species of Wolf Spider — and that’s just in the U.S. alone. Of those species, the Carolina Wolf Spider (Hogna carolinensis) is the largest, measuring up to 1 ½” in length. Wolf Spiders have a slightly hairy appearance and come in a variety of colors, including brown, black, gray and white, and occasionally yellow or green. Because Wolf Spiders are generally not good climbers, they are most likely to be found scurrying across the floor of your home or business. While Wolf Spiders are large, they are unlikely to bite and their venom is not dangerous — but they are certainly considered a nuisance pest. Black Widow Spiders
The Southern Black Widow, also known as Latrodectus mactans, is often found in new construction, in garages, around the edges of homes and around and under decks — particularly when construction materials (shingles, lumber, siding, etc.) have been brought in from large warehouses.
It’s important to distinguish between the venomous female Black Widows and their non-poisonous male counterparts. Adult females range from 8 to 13 mm in size and are shiny with large bellies and a red hourglass shape on the underside of the abdomen. Males are dull, half the size and have no red marking, making distinction very simple. Female Black Widows are dangerous, particularly to the elderly and to young children, and should be removed by a professional.
Brown Recluse Spider Control
Loxosceles reclusa is the most common Brown Recluse species found in Raleigh, NC and the eastern U.S. Featuring a distinctive violin-shaped mark on the neck (cephalothorax), Brown Recluses average approximately ¼ to ½” in length. While Brown Recluse bites are potentially dangerous, they aren’t much of a threat — this spider is not commonly found in homes in North Carolina, instead preferring undisturbed debris (hence the name recluse). Most Brown Recluse sightings turn out to be misidentified house spiders.
